HSK vs CSCA: What's the Difference and Which One Do You Need?

HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the internationally standardized Mandarin language proficiency test, similar in function to TOEFL/IELTS for English. HSK purely tests language ability — listening, reading, and (at higher levels) writing — without touching academic subjects like Math or Science.

CSCA (Comprehensive Subject Competency Assessment) is entirely different: it’s an academic placement exam testing core subject mastery (Math, Physics, Chemistry) plus a Mandarin component tailored to an academic context (STEM or Humanities track) — not everyday conversational language like in HSK.

Both can be required at once, depending on your target university and program’s requirements. Many universities require a certain HSK level (e.g. HSK 4 or HSK 5) as proof of language ability for Chinese-medium instruction, PLUS a CSCA score as proof of academic readiness for science/engineering majors. For English-medium programs, HSK requirements are usually looser or waived, but CSCA can still be requested depending on the major.

The safest approach: always check the specific requirements of your target program and university, since the combination required (HSK only, CSCA only, or both) varies between campuses and majors. Don’t assume one exam can substitute for the other — they assess completely different things.
