Common Mistakes Students Make on the CSCA Exam

One of the most common mistakes is rushing to recognize a "question type" without reading the full question carefully. CSCA-style questions often slip in small details (such as a function’s domain restriction, or a unit that needs converting first) that change the solution approach, even when the question looks similar at first glance to one already practiced.

In Physics and Chemistry, a frequent mistake is neglecting units and significant figures, even though these are often part of how answer accuracy is graded. Getting into the habit of writing units at every calculation step, not just in the final answer, helps reduce this kind of error.

In Mathematics, another common mistake is jumping straight to a formula without understanding the underlying concept relationship. This trips students up when a question is presented with a slightly different approach or notation than they're used to.

A common exam-strategy mistake is poor time management: spending too much time on one hard question early on, leaving no time for other, easier questions later. Training yourself to skip a question that feels too heavy and return to it after finishing others is a habit worth building well before exam day.
