Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province in Northwest China, has one genuinely standout campus: Lanzhou University — the only Project 985 member across this entire vast region, a fairly rare status given its relatively remote and less wealthy location compared to coastal cities.

1. Lanzhou University (兰州大学)

Founded in 1909, a Project 985 and 211 member. QS 2026: #791-800 band; ARWU: #201-300 band; EduRank 2026: #614 globally, #38 in China. Strong in Arid-Land Ecology/Agroecology (the only Ministry of Education key laboratory of its kind), Nuclear Science (helped build the Chang’e-4 lunar lander’s gamma shutdown sensor), and Chemistry/Atmospheric Science. Admits around 700 international students from 64 countries — a small but real cohort, given its inland location.

2. Lanzhou Jiaotong University (兰州交通大学)

Not a 985/211/Double First-Class member. Specializes in Transportation/Railway Engineering and Civil Engineering — its main nationally recognized specialization.

3. Northwest Minzu University (西北民族大学)

Not a 985/211 member. China’s first institution established specifically for ethnic-minority higher education. Strong in ethnic/minority studies and Tibetan and Mongolian language programs.

How This Relates to CSCA

Lanzhou University weighs CSCA Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry scores fairly evenly for its science/engineering majors, given its research strength is spread across several fields rather than concentrated in one. Lanzhou Jiaotong is especially relevant for applicants with a specific interest in transportation/railway engineering.
