Top Universities in Hefei for International Students

September 9, 2026 · CSCA Gateway Team

Hefei doesn’t have as many universities as the other major cities on this list, but USTC (a C9 member) alone makes it one of China’s most important academic cities. Here are the other solid campuses in the city — we’re being upfront about the shorter list because that’s genuinely the reality here.

1. University of Science and Technology of China (中国科学技术大学)

A C9 League member — we covered it in full in our Campus Deep-Dive: USTC article, check there for its ranking profile and flagship programs.

2. Hefei University of Technology (合肥工业大学)

An engineering-focused comprehensive university, strong in mechanical engineering, instrument science, and automotive engineering. A Project 211 member, with several disciplines ranked #501-550 in the world (QS Subject Rankings).

3. Anhui University (安徽大学)

Anhui province’s leading comprehensive university, strong in law, computer science, and materials/physics — relevant since Anhui is becoming a semiconductor hub. A Project 211 and Double First-Class member.

4. Anhui Medical University (安徽医科大学)

Anhui province’s largest and oldest medical school. Not a 211/Double First-Class member, and its international student count is relatively small — a niche option for a specific medical track, not a general international destination.

How This Relates to CSCA

For Hefei University of Technology and Anhui University, solid CSCA Mathematics and Physics scores remain the main evaluation criteria for science/engineering majors, at a more realistic competition level than USTC.
