Top Universities in Guangzhou for International Students

Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, is home to some of the strongest 985/211 campuses in Southern China. While no C9 member is based here, Sun Yat-sen University and its neighbors still rank among the most respected universities in the country.
1. Sun Yat-sen University (中山大学)
Founded in 1924 by Sun Yat-sen, a Project 985 and Project 211 member, and Guangzhou’s clear #1. QS World University Rankings 2027: #258 globally; Shanghai Ranking/ARWU: around #62 globally; EduRank 2026: #271 globally, #13 in China. According to EduRank, SYSU ranks #1 in the world across several medical fields: Oncology/Cancer Research, Radiation Therapy, Sonography/Ultrasound, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Optometry/Ophthalmology — a genuinely strong medical cluster. Home to Zhongshan School of Medicine and the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (China’s only national key laboratory of ophthalmology), plus the triple-crown-accredited (AACSB/EQUIS/AMBA) Lingnan College for business.
2. South China University of Technology (华南理工大学)
Founded in 1952, a Project 985 and 211 member. QS 2027: #342 globally; ARWU: #101-150 band; EduRank 2026: #500 globally, #30 in China. EduRank records a #1 world ranking for Polymer Science. Strong in engineering broadly and architecture (its design team worked on the China Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo).
3. Jinan University (暉南大学)

What makes JNU stand out: it has the largest population of international/overseas-Chinese students of any university in China — around 13,500 out of ~50,500 total students, from 100+ countries. Home to a National Base for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and an MBBS program for international students.
4. South China Normal University (华南师范大学)
Founded in 1933, a provincial key university with discipline-level Double First-Class status (not a full 985/211). ARWU: #401-500 band; EduRank 2026: #972 globally, #68 in China. Strong in teacher education, psychology, and education sciences.
5. Southern Medical University (南方医科大学)
Founded in 1951 (originally a military medical school), a provincial-tier Guangdong key university, not a national 985/211. EduRank 2026: #1,313 globally, #134 in China, ranking #15 in China for Medicine. A clinical medicine specialist, with Nanfang Hospital as its main teaching affiliate.
How This Relates to CSCA
For SYSU and SCUT, strong CSCA Mathematics and Physics scores are the main standard for science/engineering majors, plus Chemistry for SYSU’s medical track. Given its enormous international student base, Jinan University is especially relevant for applicants with a strong CSCA Chinese language score — particularly on the language/humanities track.
