Top Universities in Changsha for International Students
September 18, 2026 · CSCA Gateway Team

Changsha, the capital of Hunan province, is led by Hunan University (rooted in the Yuelu Academy, founded 976 AD!) and Central South University — two 985 campuses with very different histories and research strengths.
1. Hunan University (湖南大学)
Rooted in the Yuelu Academy (976 AD, Song Dynasty) — its historic gate and buildings remain an active part of the campus today. Formally named Hunan University in 1926, a Project 985 and 211 member. QS 2026: #504 globally; ARWU: #151-200 band; EduRank 2026: #663 globally. According to ARWU, its Civil Engineering discipline ranks #6 in the world. One of the first 985 campuses to offer a fully English-taught international program. Admits 800+ international students.
2. Central South University (中南大学)
Formed in 2000 from a merger of a medical school (1914), a railway university, and a technology university. A Project 985 and 211 member. QS 2026: #491 globally; ARWU: #83 globally (its strongest metric); EduRank 2026: #415 globally. According to EduRank, its Mining Engineering ranks #2 in the world. Also strong in Xiangya School of Medicine (one of China’s oldest medical schools) and Metallurgical Engineering. Admits ~1,647 international students, with ~1,000 new international students/year from 100+ countries.
Note: National University of Defense Technology
NUDT is also based in Changsha and fairly famous (especially for supercomputing), but it’s a PLA military university — not an option international/civilian students can apply to through any normal channel. Mentioned here for context only, not as a realistic campus choice.
How This Relates to CSCA
Hunan University weighs CSCA Mathematics and Physics scores strictly for its engineering majors. Central South University, given its Xiangya School of Medicine, also weighs CSCA Chemistry and Biology scores strictly for medical tracks, alongside Mathematics/Physics for mining/metallurgy majors.
