Campus Deep-Dive: Xi'an Jiaotong University — An Energy Engineering Powerhouse in Western China
September 8, 2026 · CSCA Gateway Team

Xi'an Jiaotong University (西安交通大学, XJTU) traces its roots to 1896 in Shanghai (as Nanyang Public School) before relocating to Xi'an in 1956. XJTU is the only C9 campus located in Western China, and is widely known for Energy and Power Engineering (boilers, turbines, energy systems) — one of the oldest and most respected programs of its kind in the country.

Top Programs
XJTU's School of Energy and Power Engineering (founded 1921) is the campus's most internationally recognized program. XJTU's Mechanical Engineering also consistently ranks in the world's top 5 on ARWU subject rankings, alongside Electrical/Electronic Engineering as another core strength.
How This Relates to CSCA
For engineering majors at XJTU, strong CSCA Mathematics and Physics scores are the main evaluation standard, same as other engineering-focused C9 campuses. Since XJTU is relatively less known than Tsinghua/Peking/Zhejiang among international applicants, it can be a strategic option for students with a solid CSCA score who want realistic admission chances at a world-class C9 campus.
What to Prepare
- Strong CSCA Mathematics and Physics scores for engineering majors, especially Energy/Power Engineering and Mechanical Engineering
- A clear interest in energy/power engineering can be a plus, given it’s XJTU’s core academic identity
- Consider Xi'an's relatively lower cost of living compared to Beijing/Shanghai as an additional factor in choosing a campus
