What Is CSCA and Why It Matters for Studying in China

CSCA is an academic placement exam used by a number of Chinese universities to assess international applicants' readiness, particularly for programs taught in Mandarin or foundation-year style programs. The exam typically covers core subjects such as Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics, plus a Mandarin component tailored to the candidate's academic background (science or humanities track).
For many international students, including those from Indonesia, CSCA results are often one of the university's key considerations alongside transcripts and school grades. Some campuses even require a minimum score in specific subjects before admitting applicants into their intended major, especially for science, engineering, and medical programs.
What makes CSCA fairly challenging is that its question format follows a distinctly Chinese exam style rather than a typical international curriculum. The terminology, notation, and problem-solving style used in CSCA Mathematics/Chemistry/Physics questions have their own particular character, so students used to other curricula (such as Indonesia's national curriculum or Cambridge) still need to practice specifically with CSCA-style questions, rather than relying only on general subject mastery.
That’s why an effective preparation strategy usually combines three things: a strong grasp of fundamental concepts, familiarity with CSCA’s specific question format and terminology, and repeated practice with clear explanations. Preparation that focuses on only one of these tends to leave students caught off guard on exam day.
